![]() We are loving the lengthening days and the unpredictability of the weather - enjoying the beautiful bright days of sunshine alongside the foggy, wet and windy days. It's just good to hear the birds start up each morning regardless of the weather. ![]() We are setting up some new bird boxes, to encourage more of our feathered friends to stay awhile. In advance of the swallow and house martins arriving we have added new nests, giving them an easier start after their long journeys (we also lost a lot of their nests during last year due to lime plastering the stone wall of the house- so feel we owe them a little help in light of losing their old ones). We have frequent sightings of a barn owl (or two), so have sighted a fine box in the open barn to see if we can entice an occupant. We'll keep you posted. Can't believe everything went so smoothly - the sheep happily trotted (do sheep trot?) from field to barn - enticed by the sound of a bucket of feed and gently encouraged from the rear - down the track and straight into the pen.
Elwyn, our shearer arrived just after 10am and worked his socks off - Ryelands are notoriously difficult to shear as they have so much fleece - everywhere!! He did a fantastic job and we were all done just after lunch. Thankyou Elwyn. We now have 26 sorted fleeces waiting to go to Cornwall for processing. And our sheep are considerably cooler and lighter. Thankyou sheep. We're up early this morning - to load up for the Farmer's market - we've our Indian inspired foods (including Scotch eggs, using our own hens & duck eggs) as well as our craft items - we'll see how it goes!
Sheep shearing tomorrow, so we're hoping the weather holds today and the sheep stay dry - then we've got to get them into the barn this evening - which based on last year's efforts - will be fun - hope it doesn't come to requiring the use of a wheelbarrow again - don't ask!! We are preparing for the monthly farmer's market in our parish, where we have a craft stand and a food stand. We are novices at this and although we have been trying to make time during the month to organise ourselves, it has come around really quickly - and well - we're not terribly organised!
We are aiming to offer our Indian inspired spice mixes and sauces, along with some spicy Scotch eggs - from our own chucks and ducks - so busy day in the kitchen tomorrow. But today, we're concentrating on crafting peg looms, fleece rugs and knitting kits - we'll see how we get on. |
